In Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, AFEW held a ‘Living Book’ event for 30 children from the SOS Children’s Village in aid of the International Day against Drug Taking and Illicit Trafficking

This event was the next in a series of ‘Living Book’ days for teenagers in Kyrgyzstan. The idea is that youngsters listen to the life stories of ‘living books’ – specially invited people who have interesting life or work experiences related to HIV and drug use. This time, teenagers and young people from the SOS Children’s Village gathered at the Biblioteka Café in Bishkek. Many of these children are orphans or have been living on the streets until very recently. Such children are often labelled ‘difficult’, but no-one who met them at this event would ever describe them in that way. The children react so well when they see that people are ready to pay them some attention and take an interest in their everyday problems! Read more…

“Live library” method of working allows young people to meet with “live books” – activists, who have drug experience and who are on the stage of remission for a long time now. They will share their negative drug use experience with 35 students of local financial college and will appeal to the participants in order to deny trying drugs. The event will take place under the title ‘You always have a choice! Choose healthy life style!’
The event is planned to take place in the “Library” café, the interior of which reminds a real library and the name of which is consonant with the title of the event.
