Impressive Results from AFEW’s Ukraine Prison Project Unveiled at Conference in Yalta

On 19th-20th August, AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW) organised a conference in the southern Ukrainian city of Yalta to mark the culmination of its three-year project ‘Institutionalisation of Health Promotion and HIV Prevention in the Educational System of the Ukraine State Department of Corrections’. This project, which ran from July 2007-June 2010, was funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands through its ground-breaking ‘Matra’ development programme.

Our Journey Through Ukraine on the Vienna Express

One of the final events of the Vienna Express 2010 was a tour through the cities of Ukraine from 8th-12th July to promote the photo exhibition ‘Life Triumphs!’, which was organised by AIDS Foundation East West (AFEW). Along the way, we had the good fortune to visit the wonderful cities of Kharkiv, Kirovograd and Poltava!

Already on our arrival in Kharkiv – the first stop on our journey – we encountered a very high level of interest in exhibition and we realised that there is a huge demand for a positive, friendly approach and accurate information about HIV among people in Ukraine.

Project ROST Jumps on the Vienna Express in Ukraine

From 5th-7th July, AFEW conducted a training programme under a brand new project: Project ROST (Responding to HIV through Organisational Support and Technical Cooperation in Eastern Europe and Central Asia). This project was initiated by AIDS Action Europe and is being implemented by AFEW across the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Over the three days, representatives of local NGOs and advocacy advisors from 14 countries were brought together in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv to participate in discussion and skills-building seminars on the theme ‘Development of Regional Potential and Mobilisation of NGOs in HIV Advocacy Work’.
