‘Balka’: A Window on Drug Use in Ukraine

On July 7 in Kyiv, more than 60 people attended a screening of ‘Balka: Three Stories’, a documentary about women, drug use, and HIV in Ukraine as seen through personal stories from Odessa, Dnipropetrivsk, and Poltava.  Through the course of the film the audience met Zina and Marina, best friends and active drug users about to discover their HIV status; Tanya, a mother of two who has transitioned into substitution treatment but whose husband continues to use drugs; and Galya, a former user who now works as a peer-to-peer outreach worker.

Kyiv Training for Civil Society from 14 Countries!

Here you go! On 5-7 July 2010, a training session on the theme ‘Development of the Region’s Potential to Mobilise Civil Society to Conduct HIV Advocacy Work’ will take place in Kyiv, Ukraine. The event is organised under the umbrella of the ROST Project, which was initiated by AIDS Action Europe and is being implemented by AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW).

Participants have been invited from 29 cities across 14 countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

What will you get out of the event? New opportunities! You’ll get to study the different forms and methods of advocacy work, learn about success stories from across the world and pick up best-practice advocacy techniques that you can use in your own work!

Plot Outline: BALKA chronicles the lives of women struggling with drug use and HIV in Ukraine. Through the course of the film we meet Zina and Marina—best friends and active drug users about to discover their HIV status; Tanya, a mother of two who has transitioned into replacement therapy but whose husband continues to use drugs; and Galya, a former user who now works as a peer-to-peer outreach worker. Made with the support of the Open Society Institute’s International Harm Reduction Development Program and the Institute for International Education’s Fulbright Program.
