On June 24, on the eve of the International Day against Drug Use and Illicit Trafficking (June 26), the Second All-Russian Conference ‘HIV/AIDS in the Media Mirror’ opened at the Central House of Journalists in Moscow. Representatives of youth-oriented Russian publications, civil society and healthcare institutions gathered to share their ideas and views. The main aim of the conference, which was organised by the Russian Union of Journalists and UNAIDS was to encourage the media to promote public health and HIV prevention.
Despite the current efforts to address it, Russia’s HIV epidemic is still spreading at a rapid rate. Today, around 500,000 people are registered as living with HIV in Russia. Most Russian and international experts put the true figure much higher, however. The major driver of the Russian epidemic is injecting drug use. Read more

On June 20, the citizens of Dushanbe woke up to an unusual sight: volunteers drove Vienna Express buses around the city’s streets and called on everyone to jump aboard!
Early in the morning, volunteers donned their white t-shirts and caps with the Vienna Express logo and drove their buses through the city, stopping along the way to hand out promotional materials and tell people about the campaign. They invited members of the public to do short quizzes about HIV, give interviews about their attitudes towards people living with HIV and send their message to the AIDS2010 conference in Vienna. The most enthusiastic respondents received t-shirts, caps and small souvenirs to remember the Vienna Express. Read more

In the Republic of Tajikistan, AFEW engages with the border and drugs control agencies to build awareness of HIV-related issues, observance of human rights and harm reduction techniques. AFEW, as an organisation focused on HIV/AIDS, plays an important role in training law enforcement officers and advocating for the rights of people affected by the HIV epidemic or at risk of HIV.
Tajikistan is directly located on one of the world’s major drug trafficking route and injecting drug use is rapidly increasing among the local population. Working with law enforcement bodies, our task is to ensure humane treatment of the people who use drugs or who have become involved in this huge trafficking industry.

Through the Vienna Express, AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW) is shining the spotlight on the HIV epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia and bringing this pressing issue to the attention of world leaders, media and the public. This region, which has faced unprecedented social and economic upheavals over the past decades, is now struggling to contend with the fastest growing HIV epidemic in the world.
